The basics

How solar battery storage works in Melbourne homes

  1. Step 1

Solar panels generate power during the day

Your panels convert sunlight into DC electricity. An inverter turns that into the AC power your home or business runs on.

  2. Step 2

    Surplus energy charges your battery

Instead of exporting spare power back to the grid for a few cents, it flows into your battery and stays yours.

  3. Step 3

After sunset, the battery powers your home

Keep running through the evening and overnight on the energy you stored during the day, grid-free.

  4. Step 4

Join a VPP and earn credits automatically

Opt in to a Virtual Power Plant and the grid operator can draw on stored power at peak times, paying you credits for it.

Battery Storage Retrofits

Already have solar? A battery turns your export credits into stored power you actually use. We assess your load profile, size the system to your usage patterns, and handle the full install.

  • Works with most existing solar inverters
  • Supply-only or full install available
  • Sized to your actual usage, not a standard package

Hybrid Solar + Battery Systems

New to solar? A hybrid system pairs panels and storage from day one, designed together so the inverter, battery, and array are matched from the start, not retrofitted to fit.

  • Panels and battery sized as one system
  • Single installation, one commissioning visit
  • Designed for Melbourne sun angles and load patterns

Commercial Battery Storage

Commercial storage is about demand-charge management and resilience, not just self-consumption. We size to your load profile. Supply-only or full install, we work with your existing contractor or handle it end-to-end.

  • Demand-charge management and peak shaving
  • Supply-only or full-install options
  • Compatible with most commercial solar setups

VPP Enrolment

A Virtual Power Plant lets your battery work with thousands of others. Grid operators draw on the combined stored energy at peak demand times, and you earn credits automatically. Plain English, no catches.

  • Credits paid when grid draws on your stored energy
  • Your home stays powered throughout
  • We handle enrolment with compatible VPP programs

Plain English

What is a Virtual Power Plant?

A VPP connects thousands of home batteries into a single controllable resource. It sounds complex, but your end of it is simple.

You store surplus solar

Your battery fills up during the day with energy your panels make but your home does not use right away.

The grid taps your battery at peak

At high-demand times, your VPP operator draws a small portion of your stored energy to help stabilise the grid.

You earn credits automatically

Each draw is logged and you receive bill credits or payments, depending on the program you are enrolled in.

Battery rebates - 2026

The federal battery rebate, explained

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program (running since 1 July 2025) gives an indicative discount of around 30 percent off the installed cost at common residential capacities. It is delivered through STCs at the point of sale. Since 1 May 2026, the STC rate tapers for usable capacity above 14 kWh.

On-grid batteries must be VPP-capable at install to qualify (you do not have to join a VPP). The exact figure depends on your usable capacity and the STC market price. We confirm what applies in your free quote.

What typically affects eligibility

  • New or existing rooftop solar paired with the battery
  • Usable capacity (STCs on first 50 kWh, tapering after 14 kWh)
  • VPP-capable battery and inverter at install (on-grid systems)
  • The STC market price on your install date

Solar batteries, explained

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most, so you can make a confident call before you ever request a quote.

A solar battery stores the surplus power your panels make during the day so you can use it at night instead of drawing from the grid.

By day your panels usually make more power than you use. Without a battery that surplus goes to the grid for a small credit. A battery keeps it instead, then runs your home in the evening on your own stored power rather than peak-rate grid electricity. It all happens automatically through the inverter.
